On the third day, Ripley appeared and yawned of bordom.
Think back to 1997.  Did you really want to see another Alien movie?  The first was a horror/sci fi masterpiece and the sequel was a suspensful action classic.  The third was such a mess and we had no knowledge of an assembly cut or what happened behind the scenes that made the third film the disaster it was, never mind that the movie depressing and our lead died and with no lead character, the third movie was in short a bit of a franchise killer.      Well, 6 …

What people forget when they respond to this film is that Alien 3 shut down the series, very deliberately and very conclusively. Not only did Ripley die, but the driving concerns of the series that were set up in the first film had been addressed.
