You will understand a bit more about the action in "Aliens" better if you watch "Alien." However, I saw "Aliens" before I saw "Alien" and I didn't really feel deprived at all.

Yes, you'll have to see ALIEN first; it sets everything for Aliens; you will appreciate Aliens more if you do. Please try to see the director's cut with footage not shown in theaters because of the present 70's generation. The first film is a haunted house feature in space while the second one is more action oriented with strong monster film elements (chase sequences). Alien 3 appears to be inspired by the original film moreso than the others. Alien Resurrection is the one more on science fiction with monster elements.

I've seen all the Alien series and frankly you can skip the first one. The first one is more a horror film. The second is much more science fiction oriented. I think you're asking does the second film stand on its own and yes it does.
You get enough back story with Sigourney Weaver's character to see that she's freaked that The Corporation wants to go back and check out the whole Alien thing and they send out the space Marines which is really a lot of fun.
