Shoshone Sisters

Amos Lassen

"American Outrage" is part of First Run Films Human Rights Watch and it tells the story of Carrie and Mary Dann, two Shoshone Indian sisters who fight heroically for their land rights. Thru are forced to endure horrible roundups by armed federal marshals and find that their cattle and horses are confiscated simply because they graze on the public land outside of the boundaries of their ranch. The very land upon which the grazing takes place is part of 60 million acres that is recognized by the United States government as Shoshone land. The government sued the sisters for trespassing and the issue then went to both the Supreme Court and the United Nations.
The sisters claim that the government is interested in the resources beneath the earth and that is why the case is so important to the United States. We see the courage of the Dann sisters and this is an important document for anyone who wants to understand why American Natives are so resistant to American colonialism in Indian Territory.
The cinematography is breathtaking and the story is beautifully presented. The Dann sisters are two of the most unforgettable characters that you will ever come upon and this documentary is important in seeing how tribal lands have been taken by the American government under the guise of legality. Here is a powerful testament to the self-determination of the Shoshone nation and particularly of two women. The Danns command our respect.
