*1/2 out of ****    "An American Haunting" doesn't get a single thing right in regards to being a good, scary, or engaging horror picture. But there is one thing that earns it a few points, makes it slightly more watchable, and earns the movie an extra half a star from what I would have initially rated it had it not bared this quality: excellent, often times lush visuals. An American Haunting is based on the haunting of the Bell family, one of the most documented hauntings in American history. Many theories surround what actually happened during the haunting, and this film peruses one that has become most prevalent, at least in the accounts I've read. I experienced performers in the form of Sissy Spacek and Donald Sutherland, but neither of these found this movie to be less than what I had hoped for. The story was good, and even included an ending that I would never have guessed. An American Haunting features two are able to lift it out of the ordinary. I'm not sure if it's just the part she's playing or what, but Spacek looks bored for most of the film; and while Sutherland has never been the liveliest actor, he doesn't look particularly enthused …

Although there are plenty of other horror films out there that easily provide more scares than "An American Haunting," this film stands on its own as a very good piece of Americana. Firstly, it takes place when the United States was still a frontier land where new dangers and discoveries waited around every turn.
