Pros: I'm speechless

Cons: 95 minutes of Hell

The Bottom Line: Run, hide, avoid ..... you've been warned

Ha venido de otro mundo ... Para quedarse. Unfortunately!

Few things sparkle my fancy more than a brand new creature movie. Hello? I'm still waiting! This delightful piece of dogmeat centers in Guam then on to the jungles of ....... ? Perhaps they mentioned, but I don't remember nor do I care to investigate further.

Two stories here - first we show a stealth fighter pilot on a test run. The test goes bad, the pilot goes down (in the aforementioned but undetermined jungle) and the creature appears. Then back to Guam.

Alex Reid plays Mercer, owner of a small airline in Guam. Seems she is also a former fighter pilot as well. She has been commissioned by Dr. Samuel Leon (Jose Sancho), Susana (Neus Asensi), and Valentine (Chris Potter), to take an expedition to said jungle to investigate the source of a spider attack. They are dragging along head entomologist Henry Capri (Ravil Issyanov) for the project. Valentine, an ex Marine, is also bringing a crew, Bear (Rocqueford Allen) and Reyes (Luis Lorenzo) and 4-5 natives for guides.

I'm not very plane intelligent but even I could see this was a 8 seater piper cub and it was way overloaded, not that this matters when you have creatures involved. However, the alien ‘force' surrounding the jungle they are flying to does play havoc with the instruments and the plane kinda crashes. Of course, do to the crack flying of Mercer, with help from Valentine, it isn't a total disaster, they still manage to salvage the plane. Not that they will need it again - grin.

Mercer's goal, of course, is to find her brother - the previously mentioned stealth fighter pilot that mysteriously disappeared. No one knows that.

Dr. Leon and his assistant Susana are looking for anything they can find to make them number one in their field.

Capri is looking for spiders.

Valentine and Reyes are looking to get laid.

All these things seem highly possible, even probable, except for those pesky arachnids. My feeling on the entire movie? Anytime you need an M-16 to try to kill a spider, run like Hell.

This movie has all the quality of a below budget B grade movie without the class. There is no sex in this movie. You simply cannot have a B grade monster flick without at least the hint of sexual tension. The creatures were even worse - some not even recognizable after they are killed. Death scenes are very graphic and bloody, I really don't need to see this much vomiting. At one point, they even give a close up of Reyes expelling ticks, the size of baseballs, from his mouth. Come on!

They don't bother showing the spider until half way into the movie and it wasn't even a decent spider. Ok, so it was supposed to be a mutant, big deal. I've seen plenty of mutated creatures in my time but this was truly blew huge chunks. Mostly all you really get to see are a lot of huge webs and hear a lot of weird animal sounds. Cheap flick.

There is no one in the movie you want to stand behind or even grow an affection for. If you want to find out if Mercer finds her brother, if the doctor and assistant become world wide heroes, if Capri locates his spiders or if Valentine and Reyes score, watch the movie yourself.

I swore after watching Mosquitoes I'd never watch another movie with an entomologist in it. For bug studiers they are dumber than fried rocks. Our buddy Capri is no different.

The best thing about the movie was the opening scene, an incredible sunrise over the ocean. The worse thing was the acting, quickly followed by the creatures. This was directed by Jack Sholder, written by Mark Sevi. Classified as horror, I laughed through most of the movie.

This movie was actually nominated in 2002 for Best Film by Fantasporto. It is 95 minutes of pure pain. Rated R for creature violence/gore and language. Kevin Bacon wasn't even interested.

Thanks,
Susi
