1 review about Artie Lange's Beer League

"Okay lets go over the ground rules, you can't leave first until you chug a beer."

It's been a long time since we've had a gross, slob sports comedy come out.  Booze, broads, drugs, a largely unkempt cast and very unPC humor.  Everything is so sanitized right now that for comedies to really push the limit end up looking stupid and weak.  Artie Lange's Beer League doesn't just cross a line, it vomits all over it.

Artie Lange is on Ed's Beer and Swill Softball team.  They come in last place every season and rarely win a game, much to the delight of the fitness club sponsered team whos pitcher knows Artie all the way back to grammer school days and reminds Artie every step of the way how much more successful he is over Artie.  After what has become a traditional fight between teams, it's settled by the police that who ever places lower in the league by the end of the season, moves to a new division.  It's up to the Bar team to actually practice for a game they might win and stay in the league.

Where do the jokes go?  Jokes about gays, religion, race, women, cocanie, priests, herpes, blacks, Italians, sexual orientation, abortion, drugs, being fat, sexism, and more.  Did some of those categories cross into others, or were redundant to mention?  Just making sure I covered all the bases of where the movie gets it's material.  If none of this bothers you, then you wil love this movie.

A nice supporting cast with Jim Florentine as a catcher, Seymour Cassell as Dirt, the the pitcher who gets the best lines in the movie, Jim Breuer as an obnoxious carnie, Mary Birdsong as a sassy waitress, Ralph Macchio as Arties best friend and Laurie Metcalf who plays Artie's mom and gets some mileage out of her scant three scenes.

The movie is low budget and low class.  Coupled this with the the blue humor and you have a low rent movie.  Your mileage will vary on how much you like material.  Don't walk into this movie expecting a masterpiece, it's far from it.  Even velvet paintings in a gin joint are masterpieces compared to this movie.  Think of the movie as Animal House's Delta House plays softball with Artie Lange as John Belushi.  If you yearn for this then Arite Lange's Beer League will fill a very missing void in your left field.
Artie and his team in jail Artie and his date. The rest of the team Artie and his Mom
