Okay, I know I'm going to get a lot of opposing opinions but this is my opinion of Avatar.   I don't normally do movie reviews but felt compelled to do so in the case of the new movie "Avatar" which my wife and I recently drove twenty miles from our home to watch. Some theaters around the country show the movie in 3D (with the glasses) but that isn't available in our area. First, let me clarify that this movie was created by the very talented and successful producer/director …

Simply put James Cameron's "Avatar" is terrible.  The story is one cliche after another, with plot elements that all worked better in previous movies.  Basically this film is "Dances With Wolves" with substantially better graphics but with a story that is a mere shadow of Kevin Costner's touching and powerful Academy Award winning film.  Everything is telegraphed well in advance, from the total lack of subtelty in the foreshadowing of the Toruk to …

Avatar has brought the future to our doorstep, and we'll be wondering why the door was ever closed.
Two reasons prompted me to see Avatar: 1. This is James Cameron's first movie since Titanic set sail 10 years ago, and 2. During that span of 10 years, James Cameron developed the 3D technology required to make this movie and designed to revolutionize movies as we know them. There were many who were skeptical, wondering whether Cameron would keep his promise of changing the way we watch movies. Let me tell you, Avatar lives up to the hype. This movie was as groundbreaking as it can possibly …

The late 2009 big buzz in movies is a scifi action film called AVATAR.  The plot is the classic big guy against the little guy, underdog theme.  It is reminiscent of how Native Americans are portrayed as being victims of European expansionism.  An "avatar" is a character controlled by another person, much like any video game you might play -- the character you control is an avatar.  It follows your commands, but when you stop telling it what to do, it does nothing.  …

The long awaited James Cameron film Avatar hit theaters this past weekend. While opening weekend raked in an estimated $77 million in domestic ticket sales and an additional $159 million in ticket sales in 106 countries overseas -- excluding Japan and China who are still to come. This weekend Avatar did reach the #9 spot for All Time Worldwide Opening Records and the #2 spot for Top December Opening Weekend Records. However, some reports have come in saying that the blizzard that hit the east coast …

The recent blockbuster, "Avatar" has gained loads of attention with regard to its brilliant blend of fantasy and reality.  Through surreal graphics and a provocative storyline, the film kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.  I was so enthralled that I completely forgot about the clunky, expensive, 3-D glasses donned on my face!  Nevertheless, as much as I enjoyed the screening,  I left feeling disappointed with the ending.      …

Cameron has outdone himself making over a ton of money off this miraculous and well-made movie. Cameron was supposed to make this film back in 1996, but due to technological deficits, he didn't make it. I'm glad he didn't because what they made out of this film was just amazing.  The start of Avatar is breathtaking, as James Horner’s tribal music rises over a 3-D planet seen from above, all mist and tree tops. Like …

Avatar 3D was an excellent movie. I was actually sad it was over and I had to get back to the real world afterwords. The plot was a little unoriginal, as it was basically the same as Fern Gully, except they made the main character larger instead of smaller. They did make the plot a little more complex for Avatar, including space and aliens instead of fairies. The rain forest became a futuristic planet, as if the rain forests on Earth have already been wiped out and now the humans need a new world …

Graphics great!
I liked the movie for its graphics but  I felt it was still lacking in the story line and the choice of some of the actors they used in my opinion. The lead characters were convincing and moving at some points. An example of this would of been when the tree was burning . You could almost feel the emotions the characters were feeling through the life like graphics and emotions used. It kinda reminded me of the EA games Sims 2 graphics but on a much bigger scale, …

I finally managed to get in to see it today, a week and two days after opening. Karen went with me and we opted for the non-Imax 3D version. I don't know what Roger Ebert was thinking - maybe invites to some nice parties or something - but I certainly did not leave the theater "feeling the same way I did after seeing Star Wars". No comparison, in fact. Star Wars blew me away. True, I was much younger then, but. I was even younger when I left the theater after watching 2001: A Space …

I recently got to watch this movie from renting at my local Redbox machine. I mean for 1$ to see a movie you cannot beat that price. Anyway onto my review this movie shows so much to us in terms of loving on another and greed. In this movie basically a hurt soilder is asked to become an Avatar so he can learn how to get in with the natives as they call them.   I think in general you shoul see this movie kids would love it. It shows so many things to you without watching it …

I'm not really into scifi movies but was hearing the hype about this movie from all my friends. My husband and I decided to check it out in 3D ofcourse making it quite the movie "experience." I absolutely loved the graphics and visuals and the story line was very moving as well. What struck me the most was paraplegic Jack Sulley's new ability to walk and run as he is granted a mental link with a scientifically created Na'vi human hybrid and the freedom he finds living and interacting …

I didn't get the chance to see this one in theaters, but I bought it of DVD. When I first watched it, I thought it was the greatest movie that I had ever seen. Upon later "inspection" I noticed some similarities between Avatar's plot line and another popular movie's plot. Pocahontas is the story of a Native girl who is living a happy and normal life until a soldier comes to take her land away from her, but in the process they fall in love. Avatar follows this same …

Take the Story of The Last Samuari or Dances With Wolves move it tothe future add some excellent CGI and make it 3D for good measure and you have this movie.  This time around the Earth is a dying planet and a group of scientists and military are interested in a specific mineral (maybe dilithium crystals?) from the planet of the Navi.  They are a large humanoid species that live in a ecological system where all forms of life seem to be connected to each other and everyone worships a tree …

3D Movies are nothing new. They've been around for quite a while. But they have never quite seemed to fulfill their full potential. In the past, most 3D movies were quite gimmicky... used primarily for shock value (like sharp objects, blood, birds... being thrown at the screen).  All of us 3D enthusiasts have been waiting for that one big film that not only looks gorgeous in 3D, but tells a great story and gets us pulled into the scenes... as if we were standing inside that world.  A film …

Thanks to your reviews, I rented Avatar (not my kind of movie; I didn't think so) - and I loved it. The special effects were phenomenal, the acting superb, and the story line was simple yet brilliant. Seeing it with surround sound at home was good enough, but I can only imagine how superb it was at the theater. Thank you guys and gals for expanding my horizons!!

Once in a while a movie comes along that manages to encapsulate an entire subset of human experience within 2 - 3 hours of on-screen entertainment. The Ten Commandments with Charleton Heston is a good example of such a film, along with Gandhi and Ben Hur. I would put Avatar into this discussion, as it is that great of a movie. The plot is simple enough; in the far future mankind has discovered a planet rich with a valuable resource. Mankind has sent its military to acquire this resource. The military …

It's a good enough story, made great by the special effects. I thought I'd hate 3D--always did before--but these glasses really work and the movie made excellent use of the technology.

I saw James Cameron's "Avatar" on its opening weekend. With all of the hype surrounding the film I expected it to be either A) one of the greatest films ever made or B) just another visual feast with a hollow plot. It turns out that it was actually a visual feast with a plot stuffed to the brink with borrowed ideas from other films including many of Cameron's own previous projects.      The film's basic plot is that a human mining company has arrived on …

Pros: Well directed, scenery is beautiful, a 40-minute climax where James Cameron blows stuff up     Cons: The preceding two hours - dead disbelief suspension and moral-whipping     The Bottom Line: Avatar's acclaim keeps my faith in humanity from getting too high.     You know, it's usually actors who are associated with chewing the scenery. James Cameron's highly acclaimed, 12-years-in-the-making spectacle Avatar is a breathtaking example …

The world created in this movie is incredible! I would love to live on pandora. James Cameron did a great job at utilizing the 3D tech.

Avatar is very clean on the eyes. And impresses the audience with it's stunning animations. It is a story of a marine that is put into another dimension to cooperate with the Navi community in order to build and co-exist with the humans.      The main character ends up not just wanting to co-exist, but live with them without the humans interference.      Long story short, it's a great movie to see with the family, and if you see it in …

It's best not to compare Avatar 3-D to an ordinary movie. It's more like one of those rides at an amusement park, where you put on 3-D glasses and sit in a moving chair, or like an Imax event, where what you really want is not so much a story but an experience, to see something new, something you've never seen before. Most of those films do not really have brilliant stories behind them, and the narration in Imax films is usually pretty preachy, but what you get from them is a few moments of immersion, …
