I think Avatar is appropriate for a seven year old, and I think that a boy would especially love it. He might be bored during the first parts of it that actually explain what's going on, but as the movie develops and there are more action scenes, I'm sure he'll be juiced about it. There's barely any sexuality, which I doubt he'd pick up on anyways, and the violence isn't gory. This is definitely not the type of movie that will leave a child sleeping in his parents' bed for the next month nor is it one that will have a negative influence on him. If anything, he might pick up a lesson from the storyline.
I'd pretty much agree with what's written below, however I'd point out that it depends on how the child has been raised, what he and his parents are accustomed to, developmental maturity, etc. I would also point out that it would likely depend on whether or not they watch the theatrical version or the extended cut (the latter which would probably contain more violence and possibly some minor sensuality). For the most part though, I think that if this child has seen either the "Star Wars" films or "The Lord of the Rings", the level of violence in "Avatar" isn't likely to be an issue.

I think the violence and combat in Avatar is about on the same level as Star Wars. Considering what's in cartoons geared for kids, Avatar is probably fine for a 7 year old.
I'd say most likely it would be fine. I have an almost 4 year old, and we showed her select scenes rather than the whole thing, due to the violence of the combat scenes and intensity of some other scenes. A 7 year old in today's culture though, if he's been exposed to other combat / violent things anyway, would be fine and LOVE the scene where they teach him to fly (our daughter's fave)!

I agree with the other answers. The 7 year old may not follow everything going on, but if he's a boy and likes action I think it would be OK. No more violent than Transformers or any video game!

Hm. I would have to say that a 7 year old would love the visuals of the movie, though some themes may be a little dark for him--but thankfully, he'll be too young to pick them up. The action scenes are pretty intense in that movie but no more intense as the ones a kid is exposed to on cartoons like Justice League, Ben 10 and Avengers. I think it'll be perfectly alright to see it with a 7 year old. But as Sean says, the SE may be more violent since it is the uncut version.
