BATS! - perfect killing machines

  • Sep 22, 2000
Pros: Really great special effects on the BATS!

Cons: The story line, of course

A trip on the dark side of the moon, our lovely little creatures are particularly ugly and vengeful in their spirit. As with most monsters, they did not evolve on their own, but by the wily hands of some deranged scientist locked up way too long on his own in a laboratory. Of course, we have our obligatory fiesty, snappy, sexy love team - sort of like Hansel & Gretel take on the Chiroptera and end up a$$hole to apple cart in bat guano!

BATS! have been invented by better living through chemistry, as a perfect fighting machine by our armed sources. Of course, as always happens, the one deranged scientist, so in awe of himself and his accomplishment, releases the BATS! on population because - as he says "He can control them" - ahem! I am sure that is the entire premise of the story - American scientists going bad, perfectly innocent bystanders coming to the rescue, a le that other pleasant release Nightwings, but I just took it for its' dynamic special effects, and let it go at that.

The BATS! in this movie are a visual love feast to a true monsterholic like myself. And they bless you with some really great UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL views of these babies, not always something offered in a monster flick.

The heroine in the movie, Dr. Sheila Casper (Dina Meyer), a bat expert on a mission, elects to study and interpret the lifestyles of these creatures because, as she states....(out of content)...."My father made me hold one and it was the softest thing I ever felt". Sheila, baby, let me introduce you to Charmin, Kleenex - something!

Lou Diamond Phillips is the local sheriff, doesn't he always play a sheriff or an absolute bad guy? Man just cannot seem to find a middle ground type of role in his life. He joins forces with the beautiful Dr. Casper to burrow underground and roust out these delightful creatures, on their home turf. As usual, he emerges - guano enhanced - a hero in his own right.

The movie itself is pure bunk, highly predictable in all scenes. But the special effects in this release far outweigh the terrible story line. It isn't anything the writers or directors should be proud of as it is particularly explicit in its' gore. But the BATS! are downright fetching with their bared teeth and ticked off attitude. For once computer graphics pays off (geez, they ARE made through computer graphics, aren't they?).
