Amazing Series, Mediocre Boxset

I loved the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series during its run on Syfy channel, it is probably my favorite Sci-Fi series ever.  So upon learning the release of the Blu-Ray version of the complete series, I pre-ordered it on Amazon.

The first thing I noticed when I received the complete series is how BIG the packaging is, it is almost a foot on each side, so it probably will not fit on most people's DVD shelf, and each season is packaged inside a cardboard box and the discs are separated by cardboard sleeves, while functional, the overall package felt kind of cheap for something that costs over $200.

I was also expecting a lot of extras packed in with this package, I was disappointed to find out that the only extra (other than the standard commentary tracks on each disc) is the movie "Razor", and a pretty cheap looking Cylon action figure.  The excellent "Caprica" is not included, nor are the webisodes and "The Plan" (to be fair, "The Plan" was not yet available when the series was released).  So the complete series basically is just individual seasons packaged together.

As far as the image quality is concerned, it definitely looks good, but no where near as good as I was expecting the Blu-Ray version to be.  I guess most of it might be intentional, since a lot of scenes in Battlestar Galactica are very stylized (sometimes it appears grainy to look more "gritty", and sometimes a super bloomed look), so most of the time, it didn't look much better than upscaled DVD.

Despite all the gripes I have with the complete series, I am still enjoying the series immensely, simply because the show is so good, and you'd forget about all the deficiencies when you are watching it.
