Boogeyman 2 - 2007

Rating:
+1
Pros: good old nudie shots and plenty of gore

Cons: it's a low budget movie, take it for that

The Bottom Line:

He's hiding inside your head
He's hiding behind your eye
He be there until you die”

To my knowledge I never saw the original release of this movie, assuming since this is Boogeyman 2 there must have been a #1 some time. The good thing about that is I’m not coming in like I would with other sequel movies and hope they somehow magically tie the two together. I’m taking this film on its own merits.

I guess to give us viewers not familiar with the Boogeyman scenario, they open with a small intro with two small children at home with their parents. The boy, although they say he is like 10-11 in the movie, looks to be about 7-8 years old, the girl a little younger. He has a fear of the boogeyman who he sees lurking about their house. His parents chided his babylike attitude but his sister stood by his side. Sure enough, as the boy goes upstairs to use the restroom, the parents are murdered.

They then flash ten years or so forward and Henry is being released from a sanitarium. His sister, Laura, is coming to pick him up unaware that he has accepted a position in California and she will be alone once again. Laura, although it was never revealed before, seems to fear the same boogeyman. So Henry checks out and dang if Laura doesn’t check in. To top it off, they put her in Henry’s old room, the stupid twits.

The first thing I might mention is the fact that Tobin Bell is the head doctor at this house of pleasure. If I was told he was the one I had to reveal my deepest, darkest, fears to, I’d just bolt. The man is simply creepy and sure wouldn’t offer a nurturing attitude. But that is just my opinion.

Of course, as soon as Laura moves in the murders start. Some things are fairly ‘slasher flick’ predictable but overall it wasn’t all that bad of a movie. Gory, for sure, but holding true to old slice and dice movies from the past we get a few nudie shots and a lot of bloodletting. Apparently they didn’t give a flying flip about ratings although this movie is unrated. I’d certainly slap an R rating on it for language, nudity, drug use, a lot of blood and gore, and the appearance of Tobin Bell.

It kind of marries Halloween to Friday the 13th, using the ever present, not able to kill, boogeyman, the stranded teenagers in the hospital, and the fine array of disposing of his victims. He was quite ingenious I might say. The ending won’t have you saying … “Why, I’d never guessed that was the boogeyman” because it is sort of predictable but it is mildly entertaining along the way.

Boogeyman 2 was directed by Jeff Betancourt, writers were Brian Sieve and Eric Kripke. Sadly, no awards, and like I said, they didn’t commit to a rating. Matt Cohen played the part of the grown Henry in a creepy loveable way but darling little Danielle Savre as Laura stole the show with her tank tops and heaving chest.

Extras included commentary by Betancourt and Sieve; commentary with Tobin Bell & Danielle Savre, as well as the producers Gary Bryman & Steve Hein; the typical featurette, this one titled Bringing Fear to Life; trailer; and previews.

Just remember, the boogeyman lives off your fears so don’t expose them.

Thanks,
Susi
