Casque D'or is a tragic romantic drama directed by Jacques Becker and stars Simone Signoret and Serge Reggiani. Marie (Simone Signoret) is a high class prostitute and the girlfriend of a jealous gangster named Roland. A former hood turned carpenter Georges (Serge Reggiani) falls in love with her on first sight. Her boyfriend's boss Felix Leca (Claude Dauphin) is also sprung on her and tries to negotiate the relationship between her and the boyfriend. But a chance meeting at a club causes George and Roland to fight in a knife duel monitored by Felix, the winner gets Marie whilst the loser dies. How can so much drama be caused by a woman? Why is she called the "casque d'or"? Who will win the fair hand of this "lovely" lady?

One of the films that inspired the French New Wave cinema. Jacques Becker's screenplay was inspired by a true story. The film takes place during the turn-of-the-century and a lot of costume designs and sets were created from that era. Simone Signoret carries the film and is a true acting marvel. I really enjoyed the soft lighting and the directing moves the film at a real nice pace. Becker uses wipes and dissolves in the editing. If you enjoy crime dramas and French romantic movies then you'll really enjoy this one. A tragic story that will stick in the back of your brain for awhile,
