I was pleasantly surprised after watching The Chair, written by Michael Capellupo and directed by Brett Sullivan. It is rated R for some language and violent content and was nominated and won 5 awards. For a little indie film with a minor budget, it put the creep back in creepy. As a point of trivia, the panic chair that was designed for the film actually works but, naturally, they can’t confirm it would actually kill anyone. That would be taking film making a little too surreal to try it out. In addition, the film was all done in the directors actual apartment, which would give me the willies for weeks afterward.

The main character in the film, other than the chair, was Danielle, played with a decent amount of freaked-out b!tch by Alanna Chisholm. There was just something about the way she titled her head and adjusts her neck, making that freaky popping sound … yuk. She also had a great stare factor with some outstanding eye work.

Danielle, apparently, had suffered sort of a mental breakdown. Now she’s back in the real world, doped up on the appropriate meds, and trying to get her life back in order. She moves into an old Victorian house which just reeks disaster from the moment she pulls up in front. The fact that she is starting to feel a bit paranoid again … well, maybe she has just cause.

Her sister, Anna, often comes to her rescue, even spends the night once in a while. Anything to get Danielle back on track. But it appears Danielle train has left the tracks and even Casey Jones couldn’t get this train right again.

This little movie gives you lots of things to fall back on - serial killer, murder, psychosis, ghosts, child abusers, and even some mind games by a charlatan that even Houdini couldn’t dispel. Given the tight budget and restraints, Sullivan still manages to build enough tension and suspense to have you glance over your shoulder on occasion and, trust me, you won’t ever look at a jar of change the same way again.

Camera work is decent, acting is superbly subtle, and the script has just enough of a twist with a jumpy ending to make this a step away from the norm.

DVD extras include: commentary; behind the scenes feature; trailer; unedited Zymytryk footage. Worth the watch.

Thanks,
Susi
