A movie directed by Lasse Hallstrom

It is the late 1950s, but it might as well be the late 1850s in a small French town where everyone behaves as they should (supposedly), and attends church regularly. When a strong North wind blows through town, it brings the vivacious and mysterious … see full wiki

Pros: Very heart soothing and date movie, she will melt in your arms with this one.

Cons: You would be missing a good movie if you don't see this one.

The Bottom Line: Would highly recommend to see for the very reason that every one has dreams that they want to come true.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

The story that this movie tells, is of a non-religious woman who opens a Chocolate shop. A shop and a woman that the French town doesn't want to accept. It starts out kind of fuzzy. When her father goes to Chile to study herbs and other such vegetation that a old Indian tribe has discovered. He falls for a young tribe member and eventually marries her. This is where he gets all of the secrets to these herbs and passes them to his daughter (Vianne Rocher) Juliette Binoche.

This magical cocoa plant has powers that you would not believe. When you eat it your deepest desires come true. She takes this magical herb and travels to different town just as the gypsies did. When ever the wind blew it seemed like that is the way that she and her daughter traveled. She also has a knack for picking your favorite taste. She does for every one that she meets.

When she arrived at this small French town she met the town mayor played by Alfred Molina. An overbearing Capitalistic pig, a hypocrite at best. When she tells him that she doesn't go to church he instantly takes a disliking to her. From that point on he tries to destroy her, making her life miserable and trying to turn the town against her.

It all starts out when this woman comes into her shop and Vianne gives her some chocolate and then the woman throws it away and her husband finds it. The problem is that most of the time he is drunk and treats her like dirt. But after he tries this he gets very passionate with her and they keep coming back for more. Then she makes friend with this other woman (Lena Olin) that likes to steal but her husband beats her. So Vianne takes her in and teaches her the business.

During which all this is going on the mayor is still trying to destroy her and her business. Then A traveling troupe of gypsies come in by the river which the mayor also doesn't like at all. With all this happening the mayor tries to get rid of these people also. That is when she starts to fall in love with Johnny Depp. The man that beats his wife then in turn tries to help the mayor by trying to get rid of these gypsies by burning their boats. He does not realize that he almost kills people and when the mayor finds out he bans this man from the town forever. This is the most moving moment of the movie.

I brought my girlfriend to see this movie because I wanted to have a special night out with her. Just like in the movie when your dreams come true, your heart is wide open. Remember you can always have dreams. I learned that from this movie. If you trade your dreams away you don't have any thing. For example I had a dream of being on a date with a beautiful woman. Well, here I sit with the most beautiful woman that I know. Now you see by keeping your hopes and dreams alive you will always have a chance for them to come true, as they did for me.

This movie also show you that no man has the right to lay a hand on another person or you pay the consequences. As in this case the man was banned forever. All during this movie the mayor plotted against her to try and destroy her. Yet she never gives up. He had problems of his own that he didn't want to admit to. When he finally goes overboard and he tries to destroy her shop.

This is when he starts to chop up every thing he accidentally gets some of the chocolate on his lips. And because he has not eaten in a couple of weeks he goes nuts and eats a lot of this and falls asleep. That is where he is found by Vianne, but she promises not to tell any one. When he awakes he is a changed man.

There is a lot more to this movie than I can tell you. All I know is that I felt like I was in this movie because all my dreams of being with a beautiful woman that I can treat to every thing that I can give her is my deepest desire and are coming true. This movie made me wish I had some of that chocolate. Definitely take your date to see this one.
