Chuck & Buck (2000)

1 rating: 5.0

Despite all Sundance and critical fanfare to the contrary, this intriguing indie hit is hardly an easily digested little winner. Miguel Arteta's film is more than a bit unsettling, and scene after scene plays with intense discomfort. After the death … see full wiki

"Chuck & Buck"

Sensitive and Intelligent

Amos Lassen

"Chuck and Buck" focuses on the pain of growing up, the persistence of primal fears and desires into adulthood and the desperate human need for love and it does so with style and intelligence. Chuck and Buck were best friends growing up until Chuck moved away when he was 11. Sixteen years later, Chuck (now called Charlie) is a successful music executive, but Buck is still has the emotional maturity of an 11-year-old. When Buck's mother dies, he looks up Charlie, whom he hasn't seen since they were kids, and initiates a relationship. Charlie is embarrassed by Buck's emotional immaturity and tries to cut off all contact. But this shatters Buck and he stalks Charlie and his fiancée Carlyn until Charlie is forced to re-examine their childhood relationship.
This surface story would be enough for most movies, but this film is a bit deeper and looks at the way we deal with embarrassing situations--or don't handle them. Buck (Mike White), the film's screenwriter) is a case of arrested development. He doesn't know when not to talk and he who stands too close. He has no idea of not being welcome. Buck had only hand one real friend in his life and that was Chuck and therefore he figures that he was Chuck's only friend. The mistake was that Carlyn (Beth Colt) mentioned to Buck at his mother's funeral that he should come and visit and he did just that a few days later. Chuck tells him to go somewhere but he also realizes that he has some responsibility to Buck. Buck feels that he is finally free and finds other things in Los Angeles that interest him. He starts to go to an underground theater group and he writes a play about himself and Chuck and gets the producer to direct it.
The movie is original and can be regarded as controversial because of the focus on sexuality. "Chuck and Buck" is a strange, intense and moving film about friendship and loss.
I thought this is an excellent film for. It is a film about friends who never quite leave their childhood years, and have been waiting for that one moment to close the door on their past. This is not a film for everyone, but it does reveal some thickly layered characters with wonderful acting by White. This is a drama that is relevant in today's society and should continue to be a cultural staple in the film world.
