What a surprise this was to me to realize this was a pro choice film that dealt with many complex issues surrounding orphanages, abortion rights of women, relationship issues and finding onself. I was not prepared for the multitude of emotions that I experienced watching this film. I was pleasantly surprised.

I've seen Tobey Macguire in several films; Pleasantville, October Sky and now in The Cider House Rules. He generally plays the same type of character, a sweet, mature and very clever young man who is going places. He again plays basically the same part in this film based on John Irving's novel of the same name.

This movie was poignant and stirring and very sad in places. The scenes of the children in the orphanage really tug at your heart. The basic plot is of the young man who must leave the orphanage to find himself only to realize that his destiny lay back at the orphanage.

Michael Caine is really great in this too. It took me a little while to get used to his American accent. A good all around family movie, no violence, no profanity, a brief sexual scene.
