Dante's Peak is a disaster film that portrays the effects of a massive volcanic eruption on a fictitious small town in the Pacific Northwest. Released February 1997, several months before Volcano, the film won praise in the scientific community for scientific accuracy. Dante's Peak was written by Leslie Bohem and directed by Roger Donaldson, and grossed over $178 million worldwide, despite having been a domestic box office failure and receiving negative reviews.

I used to absolutely love Dante's Peak because I went through a period of childhood where I was truly obsessed with volcanoes. I read about them all the time and had even bookmarked dozens "volcano-cams" in Internet Explorer. I still love volcanoes, but not to the degree where I check volcano-cams 30 times a day.     Dante's Peak came out at the height of my obsession and I fell in love.
