Dirty Dancing or dirty tricks to get us to buy the DVD? Both!

Pros: Good music, some fun steps, some Dirty Dancing movie references

Cons: Can't get a good cardio workout, workout times are much shorter than advertised, disappointing

The Bottom Line: The Dirty Dancing workout is fun but way shorter than advertised. 73 minutes? NO way! Unless you do it three times in a row. What's up with that?

I love the movie Dirty Dancing so I fully expected to love the official workout. I don't. They DVD outright lies about the length of the workouts and getting a good cardio workout is nearly impossible.

The Dirty Dancing - Official Dance Workout

This DVD has workouts to four songs from the movie: Love Man, Yes, Johnny's Mambo, and Do You Love Me. You can choose which songs you want to workout to or do all of them in a row. There is a Saturday Night Challenge as well, which is just all four songs in a row to dance to.

The instructors are Tracey Mallet and John Byrne. There are several others behind them who try for a Dirty Dancing vibe with the guys wearing black beaters and pants and the girls wearing sarong skirts and such.

There is a short "syllabus" segment which teaches the steps you will use during the workout. It's fine for what it is but some steps are tricky and they don't really show you how to master them.

Now for my HUGE complaint. The DVD says that each song is between 12 and 14 minutes long. Not true! The songs are only 3 minutes each if that. There is no time to work up a sweat or to even get your heart rate up. The Saturday Night Challenge, which is all four songs together, is only 11 minutes so you do the math. How can they say that this workout is 73 minutes long (including the instructional section)?

If you do all four dances and the Saturday Night Challenge, you will have worked out for 22 minutes. What gives with that? To really get a heart-pumping workout, you would have to do the whole thing twice or do the Saturday Night Challenge three or four times in a row and, frankly, the dances aren't that much fun to repeat them that many times.

The music is great. It is the original music and loud enough to clearly hear. You can opt to just dance to the music without instruction which is fun but, still, not a real workout. Unless you're a rank beginner, you simply won't get your heart rate up into the fat burning zone with this DVD. I have no idea why Lionsgate falsified the times of each workout song but, trust me, they did.

Buying Info

You can buy this DVD anywhere that exercise DVDs are sold. Beware. The pic on the front is not of anyone in the workout. The couple is just as fictitious as the times of the workouts printed on the back.

Conclusion

Fun music, some steps from the actual dances, somewhat sexy but not a workout. This DVD disappointed me terribly. I so wanted to really get into the songs and shake my booty but, just as I started to, the songs ended. 2 stars. 3 for the workout but one star off for misleading the public about workout times.
