Pros: Somewhat plausible, well acted.      Cons: Disconnected at times.     The Bottom Line: With District 9 I did experience that same disconnectedness and that’s the point the movie is supposed to leave the audience winded, shaken and thinking about our supposed humanity.     Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot. A mysterious alien ship appears above Johannesburg, South Africa. The aliens aboard are weak and dying, and are eventually moved to a shabby refugee camp where they are feared and misunderstood by the locals, and taken advantage of by ganglords. Meanwhile their technology is being studied by a multinational corporation that hopes to take advantage of their advanced weaponry. When the timid bureaucrat Wikus is charged with leading an operation to transplant the "prawns" (as they are called by the …

My first confession is that I fell asleep about an hour into this movie. Yes, despite the booming theater sounds of alien guns that were apparently detonating the heads and bodies of humans, I fell asleep. I woke up just in time to see the climatic final battle where additional limbs and heads were severed or incinerated by said weapons. It also gave me a chance to get an idea of what I missed and where the movie was going. District 9 must have been a good movie.   …

Movies about aliens on earth have been popular going back to the black & white days, so it is really hard to come up with something new and original. There have been several that were noteworthy. Maybe the first was the original War of the Worlds, followed by The Day the Earth Stood Still, in which we encounter the god-like aliens who come not to destroy, enslave or uplift mankind, but to discipline us. Spielberg released the next two milestones. Close Encounters of the Third Kind was probably the …

Tries to combine too many social & political issues & ends up aiming too high. Also, quite derivative films like "The Fly" & "Enemy Mine".

I saw District 9 a while back and I had liked it, but I think more could have been made with the ending. I would still recommend seeing it.

It's a case of humans are 'alienised' while aliens becoming more human-like! I like the movie more than I can to admit :-)

Pros: Good storyline, realistic execution, a nice change     Cons: A few weird holes, you may find the main character difficult to like     The Bottom Line: HAH! For once America isn't the bad guy screwing everything up! Fantastic, I'm down with this.     Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot. When I first saw the trailer for this, I thought it was going to be a weird funny parody-like movie.  I think …

The start of this film really presented somewhat of a unique challenge for first time feature film director, Neill Blomkamp as it adopted a realistic documentary story telling style for the majority of this bizarre Sci-Fi picture. This was a unique style and for the entire time that was maintained I found myself being utterly enthralled by the whole ordeal. Something went wrong however, and in the last 45 minutes or so, Blomkamp abandoned that cinematographic method for a generic action sequence …

For starters, I'm reviewing a movie I've not seen.  However, my "encounter" with the trailer left me with this brief, yet interesting take...  Let's see, where to begin...      So, this is another quick run-off movie about aliens who've crashed to Earth.  Through some intervention, a town...dubbed District 9...has been cordoned off and alloted for these aliens.  The aliens look like shrimp transformers..hence my headline.      …

Some really interesting thoughts provoked at the start — but devolves into a bit of a mess by the end

District 9 is an all around solid movie grounded in good acting & storytelling. Different from any Alien movie out there to date. See it!
