During the late 90's, the french film industry and the fledgling Hong Kong film companies product were having a huge impact upon each other. French screenplay writers were finding work in Hong Kong whilst Hong Kong actors and film crew members were working in several French films. This caused an influence of creativity in both industries. A low budget gem called Dobermann managed to mix in the best aspects of both cinemas creating a unique film (Brotherhood of the Wolf is another film that comes to mind). Vincent Cassel plays Dobermann, a cool as ice thief and criminal mastermind. He's the leader of a motley crew of weird characters. Monica Bellucci co-stars as Dobermann's right hand woman and main squeeze. A preacher, a burly thug named Pitbull, a drag queen and Dobermann's brother along with a strange preppy individual who's always arguing with his ex-wife on a cell phone.
The director is heavily influenced by the Hong Kong Action genre as well with Jean-Paul Melville, Jean-Luc Goddard and Francois Truffant. Dobermann's counterpart is a sadistic police Inspector (Tcheky Karyo) he has a gang of cops who'll stop at nothing from either locking up Dobermann or killing him. This is a great movie and I highly recommend it. Monica Bellucci is smoking in this picture
