A horror comedy movie
1 review about Doghouse

A movie made for sweaty, nasty pigs.

* out of ****

I am shocked that anyone could find a film as ugly and stupid as "Doghouse" funny. It's being billed as a horror-comedy, with zombies, but there are no laughs or scares to be found. The film is as desolate as the town that it takes place in, but luckily, there are zombies, and they are suitably vicious. So right there, the filmmakers got something right.

I'm not sure what the goal was when the filmmakers wrote and directed this trash. Did they want it to be accused of being misogynistic? Because that's what's going to happen. People accuse works of art such as "Antichrist" of misogyny, but now they've got actually crap on their hands with "Doghouse". It will offend people; it will disgust people, and yes, it's a real bore.

A large group of men go for some sort of "guy's-only trip" to escape from their love-lives, all of which have fallen to pieces. Upon arriving to the desolate-town of choice, assuming this WAS the choice, the lot discovers that all the woman have disappeared from the joints; and so have the men. So where are they? The woman, they are lingering in the shadows. The men, they're all dead. Technically, so are the women, but some sort of virus is turning them into zombie killing machines bent on destroying all men in sight.

The plot consists of dialogue that is supposed to be funny, male-bonding moments intended to be sweet and sort of charming, and kill scenes which are supposed to be imaginative, inventive, funny, and entertaining. There really isn't much of a plot; and the thing has as much creativity as the annual Adam Sandler flick. Perhaps it even has less of an ego.

The reason I dislike "Doghouse" so much is not because it is poorly made; but because it is poorly conceived. The whole thing is just one big offensive gore-fest; without purpose, without laughs, and without wit. It's sort of like "Shaun of the Dead", a great British horror-comedy, but less hilarious, less witty, and less, you know, ingenious. There's some good inspiration here, but none of it is used. I guess I must praise these filmmakers for making a film that doesn't LOOK like shit, but frankly, the thing FEELS that way. It can't be good news.

The actors don't deserve this movie, and it does not deserve them. These are skilled, often funny people working here; but why are they so unfunny? I know they have talent, and I have seen them in roles that I liked, but every character here is so undeveloped, unfunny, and without genuine humanity that you just kind of end up hating them all. For what it's worth, "Doghouse" gets the job done if you want a night of gore and misogyny. But why should you want to watch that? Why should you want to watch "Doghouse"? Here is a movie that I shall allow you to deal with in whatever ways you wish. I would put it in the kennel for some time, because it needs restraint. I mean, it's not like its funny enough to be let loose. Such a shame; this could have made for a good movie. Sort of. But alas, nothing good has been made, nothing has been achieved, and the whole bloody affair feels like crushed flesh on the bottom of your shoe. And that's not really a nice feeling.

sounds bad. I am a little tired of the zomedies and I ache for a real zombie drama. Thanks for the warning.
