Haunting Love Affair

  • Jan 29, 2000
Rating:
+3
Pros: Beautifully filmed, period piece

Cons: Hard to follow at first, melancholy, sexually explicit

The End of the Affair is a real twist of a movie. All I knew about this movie was that it was about this World War II couple that were having an affair. What a shock it was to realize how much more it was than that.

What this movie really is, is a haunting love story that involves several characters and their relationships with each other. This movie was filmed beautifully, and has wonderful costumes and is set in World War II England. The war is merely a backdrop to the to two lovers and the set of circumstances that they find themselves in.

The twist is that the main characters have a very different take on the same story but don't realize it until it's almost too late. Jealousy, love, passion, redemption and religion are the dominant themes here. The fist half of the film is slow going and it takes a bit of concentration to follow the story line. Once you get to the middle of the film, all the small pieces fall into place. It all makes sense and all of the characters have a sense of loss. It reminded me of the other great Ralph Finnes film "The English Patient" If you liked that film, you'll like this one as well.

To wrap up, a beautiful, haunting love story. Flawed yes, but the overall rating is good. I very much enjoyed this film and was touched by the love that came through.
