Susan and Larry Vega (Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz) have been married for seven years and are beginning to go their separate ways. Scientist Larry has developed a new insecticide and wants go on a camping trip to Yosemite to test it on the local mosquitoes. Susan hates camping, but her guardian angel (who looks just like James Mason) convinces her to go along.
What a terrible movie. Coming only a year after the heartwarming and very funny The Long, Long Trailer, this movie suffers from a miserable script and even worse direction. While Desi plays an intelligent and admirable man, Lucy is a rich snob whose nagging and fault-finding are pathetic, not funny. The whole James Mason-Angel thing doesn't work at all. He doesn't have any purpose until the last minutes of the story and up until then he's kind of creepy. The story moves at a snail's pace and could have been done in thirty minutes - minus a lot of the mean-spirited marital bickering.
This is a surprisingly unpleasant movie from America's sweethearts, made just four years before their divorce.
Although I consider myself a reasonably big fan of I Love Lucy, I've never this. I've always wondered why the pair's chemistry on TV didn't translate so greatly to film, and I this review at least backs up the theory. As you note, the tone of the flim seems to sadly mirror what was to come for their marriage before too long.
