Pros: Wynonna Ryder

Cons: Sappy, trite, overly dramatic

I just got back from seeing Girl, Interrupted and wanted to write my review while my thoughts were still fresh. The word that comes to mind the most is overkill. I like Wynonna Ryder a lot, I really do and make it a point to see most of her movies. However, she has the tendancy to play many of her characters in a sappy overly dramatic way, as if she's in a high school drama production.

The film uses loads of "authentic 60's music" to convey the reality that "Hey, this must be the 60's" which gets old fast. The film also uses the flash back technique ad nauseum where Ryder stares off into space and remembers...

The supporting cast of Whoppi Goldberg and Vanessa Redgrave are swallowed by a dumb script and it makes their roles very diminished. The plot is trite as there is the stereotypical bad girl/rebel, the wide eye new comer, the sadistic head nurse, etc...etc...etc...

It's too bad that this film didn't work as it could have been really good. The combination of poor script, trite plots and overdramatic acting sunk this one like a stone. I'm glad I paid the matinee. Wait until it comes out on video.
