SusiDee is highly disappointed that she has not been able to get her claws on the original Mothra vs Godzilla movie. Instead, I must comprise with the 1998 release, which really does no justice to the original Mothra. SusiDee is in a funk about this and will appropriately sulk for days in the corner. But, let's get out the popcorn, the Excedrin, and the Barco lounger and watch this baby.
Godzilla and Mothra, the Battle for Earth <pah!> Another ruthless company looking to make a profit off the monsters they capture on lonely deserted islands, transport to Tokyo, and then become amazed when their city is destroyed! Hello!
This time we have our obligatory character in jail that was previously married to a bigwig at the corporation. They bail him out and use his skills to sail to the island, this time Infant Island, to bring back a huge egg that has been discovered. Arriving on the island, they meet up with - uh, oh, who's this? Talking flowers? Oh, no, folks, we have miniature women - perfectly dressed in glowing orange outfits, winged sleeves, white hose and smart matching shoes. Glory be! These little ladies are the Cosmos' , survivors of some Earth self-destruction thing, where scientists have created a monster of their own, Battra. When will we ever learn?
Ok, for some reason, we've stirred Battra up again and he is heading to Japan. The aforementioned criminal and his lovely wife load up the huge egg, and the dainty misses, and head back to Japan themselves. Half way there Godzilla appears - don't ask why, it is never explained - and he attacks the ship with the egg, egg hatches (only a larva right now), and is attacked by both Battra and Godzilla. Now what did he do to these guys? Somehow - again, never explained - the Mothra larva thing escapes and swims back to Infant Island <sigh>.
Meanwhile, we've got the little ladies in a box, no durnit, it is a suitcase - how cruel! They break into song, calling Mothra to them. Mothra is what, 40 million miles away but of course hears them with their tiny squeaky voices and comes to save them. After destroying darn near the entire city, he nuzzles up to the capital building and spins an incredible cocoon, to the tune of some really sappy music.
Again, believing that Americans are incredibly dumb, we have the entire production described to us by the Cosmos' in their irritatingly whiny voices. Since we are too stupid to follow a story line, they explain that Battra was revived to fight off a meteor that is heading towards Earth. Apparently, even with their incredible machines, no one has been able to track this meteor, although we can track monsters at the drop of the hat. We, again, are faced with that sappy singing as Mothra emerges from her cocoon with fairy dust flying all around. She really is a beautiful creature, as she flies off to find Battra, and join forces against Godzilla. Battra has now emerged into a beautiful black bat, so all in all, you have a colorful display of monsters in battle. Of course, nothing happens until we get a dish of that singing again!
Next thing ya know, we have volcanoes erupting, creatures emerging from their cocoons, and Godzilla on the war path - bye, bye Tokyo! Anyway, Mothra and Battra kick the bejesus outta Godzilla (like, OMG!), and carry his unworthy carcass out to sea (ha, we know the sea waters will revive him for a sequel). Battra, however, is mortally wounded and Mothra, with the Cosmos, must take on the meteor and save the planet, flying off into the sunset together <sigh>.
Gotta love the Japanese They are so incredibly blase about monsters approaching their city and attacking it, seeming to accept the fact that monsters exist. We, of course, know monsters are real, but ours are generally two legged ones with AK-47's and an attitude. I, personally, would settle for a Godzilla any day. I am always amazed to watch these movies and see them just stand idly by, watching the monsters fly over and stomp through their cities while they exclaim in awe about the monsters prowess.
The production overall Ok, I must admit this release was really great with their computer graphics, something that would not have been available in the older version. And only the Japanese with their attitude towards monsters would have monitors designed with the words "Godzilla Tracker" stamped on them! The acting, despite the disreputable story line, was much better and the monsters - even Godzilla - were much nicer. Except for the fact that these ladies glowed in the dark (apparently so we can see them in the night sky), the colorations and markings are wonderful. Those glowing eyes, though, now that was pushing it! There is the extra attraction, however, of Mothra being able to expel this wonderful fairy dust all over the place.
Then, you have the Cosmos' who for the most part have appeared to be captured throughout the entire movie, unable to escape, when suddenly at the end they break their perfect model pose (hands folded in front of them, one foot turned sideways properly), and fly on their own into the air to land on Mothra's back. HUH?
Ok, now the thing I am always in the dark about, do we or don't we want Godzilla this time? I mean, in half the movies they make, they are begging Godzilla to come and save them and in the other half they are trying to find a way to destroy him. Don't they get confused? Doesn't he get confused?
.....'if the world lives to see another century please remember what Mothra did for you and the planet you live on.......the cosmos
