QUITE A TWIST ON DICKENS

Pros: Story line, acting

Cons: Missed Ms. Dinsmore in the end

Gotta admit I didn't even watch this movie when it was on HBO, but the other night with nothing to do I gave it a shot. I mean it is Dickens for Gods sake and I had my share of that in school. What a nice surprise.

Anne Bancroft, as the loony Ms. Dismore, reminds you of the old Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte characters. Hidden away in that creepy estate (remember I am in landscaping and I wouldn't touch that place!) mourning her lost love, takes a shine to Finn (Nathan Hawke). The movie tries to make you believe that she is the benefactor to Finn, but personally I knew as soon as that lawyer showed up it was DeNiro. Since her life is so miserable, she passes these traits on to her niece Estella (Gwenyth Paltrow).

Estella is a snob of the highest caliber when she meets Finn but shows her wares when she 'exchanges' a drink of water with him. If he wasn't already sunk before, this took him hook, line and sinker. Estella grows into her snobbery but always has a place in her heart for Finn. You know it is never going to work out just because you want it to so much.

DeNiro, escaped murderer, mobster, I guess you would call it befriends Finn, although Finn does not know it. He must have been a master escape artist to get out of the Florida jails. He runs into Finn the first time when Finn is 9 or 10, around there, Finn shows him some kindness - after a little encouragement from DeNiro, and DeNiro never forgot this kindness.

I think the acting, script, filming, directing and even the music was good in this movie. I was greatly surprised and enjoyed my stay. Does love conquer all??????
