"Harlem Aria"

Overcoming and Achieving

Amos Lassen

Made originally in 1999, "Harlem Aria" is a story for everyone regardless of race, sexuality or way of life. Director William Jennings gives us a story for anyone who wants to believe that he can overcome obstacles and achieve his dreams, whatever they might be. The film blends comedy, drama and street reality and basically it is the story of a young man in Harlem, Anton, (Gabriel Casseus) who dreams of becoming an opera singer however he is developmentally disabled. When he runs away from home (his domineering aunt), he finds himself involved in one misadventure after another. Anton has a trusting child's innocence about the world around him and this proves a danger to him when he begins his own quest for meaning in life.
Anton becomes a target for crooks and cons, one of whom is Wes (Damon Wayans), a hustler who takes Anton's money and gets into his life. We are not sure what his plans for Anton are but we feel that he is up to no good. When Anton meets Matthew (Christian Carmago), a pianist in the park and he sings while the other plays, Wes understands that he has something important on his hands.
The acting is good all around but Wayans is easily the star here and he seems to upstage everyone else.
