Take out your wands and down your black robes yes, the long awaited 6th installment to the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is here. And it is worth your muggle money.

Now the second Potter film from director David Yates gives us a new look at the Potter franchise that makes it play out more like a cinematic drama as opposed to a franchised blockbuster. You get the feeling that along with the cast of Daniel Radcliff, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint that the franchise has finally grown up.

After my disappointment with the 4th installment to the franchise, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, I was hesitant to see this movie. But when I sat into my seat I felt glued to my sitting position I didn’t want to go to the bathroom and miss even a second of this film. Yates has done it for me; I’m a Potter movie man again!

The story from which infuses teen love with the darkness that, as Dumbledore says in the first great hall sequence, “are trying to penetrate the walls of this castle as we speak.” The mature look for this movie resonates through the entire student cast including Tom Felton’s Draco Malfoy who is having a dark turn as he comes of age aiding the dark lord Voldemort’s plan to take over Hogwarts. But love strikes the entire good half of the cast from Herminie finally showing her feelings toward Ron and Harry worried about showing his feelings toward Ginny, Ron’s sister.

A word to the wise when going to go see this movie take your Half Blood Prince books and hide it in that high and barley touched shelf of your mind because if you think of the book you WILL NOT like this movie. Instead think of this movie as a movie. It is a telling of the Half Blood Prince story cinematically it is not what you would consider an adaptation to the book. It is a retelling of its basic story in the simplest form. Things were cut simply for length and time, being the fact that the movie lasts two and a half hours as it is.

Cinematically Harry Potter 6 is absolutely stunning. Director David Yates takes advantage of the simplest cinematic techniques including motifs and even his shots. Although some scenes didn’t fulfill my full expectations the movie seemed so linear in its structure and is a great film that you will want to watch for years to come.
