Among the last of the epic "blockbuster" films.

As reviewer Leonard Maltin points out, watching "How The West Was Won" at home on television is hardly the satisfying experience that movie buffs had back in 1962.   For those too young to remember "How The West Was Won" was presented in a widescreen format known as "Cinerama".  It was remarkable technology for that era.  Usually only one theatre in each city was equipped to show films in the CInerama format and the movies usually played for months at a time.

Aside from that "How The West Was Won" features an all-star cast way too long to list here.  Suffice to say that most of the major stars of that period can be found in this film.  Narrated by Spencer Tracy, "How The West Was Won" tells the remarkable story of three generations of pioneers.  It is quite sobering to witness the hardships these folks endured in an effort to create a better life for themselves and their families.  Everything about this motion picture is first rate.  The acting is superb as is the screenplay.  The photography is nothing less than spectacular.  As I recall even the soundtrack was nominated for an Academy Award

These days "How The West Was Won" is available for viewing on DVD.  And with all of the new technologies available you just might be able to recapture much of what theater audiences experienced so many years ago.  In a nation that has lost the connection to its roots viewing "How The West Was Won" would be a marvelous way to get up to speed.  Very highly recommended!
