Besides a sensual feast of cinematography and food shots nearly rivaling the close-ups found in 'Big Night,' 'I Am Love' is mostly a melodrama about a displaced Russian woman (Swinton) who fell in love with a wealthy Italian Patriarch only to yield a yearning for her motherland and ordeals with her lesbian daughter, her aspiring chef son, and his chief rival and friend to whom she takes a fall-spring interest. Listed as Swinton's acting vehicle, the film is decent, has good acting--especially from her--but lacks the overall zest needed for a stirring film concoction. Sometimes it's more style than substance.

That's a great way of stating the case in even less words. I still think it was worth watching, and she was great, but it's a bit overrated, especially the way you put it. :>)
