If... is the first film of the Mick Travis trilogy. Malcolm McDowell stars as the rebellious boarding school student who's troubles at the stuffy and cruel school he attends reach a boiling point amongst him and his fellow "Scum" students who are constantly under the thumb of the higher class "Whips". Mick's unruly nature, individualism and unwillingness to conform is a thorn in the side of the administration. Despite the brutal and harsh punishment dealt to him by the whips, Mick plots a revenge not only against the faculty but his fellow lap dog students as well that ends with a real bang that has to be seen to be believed.
An interesting film from Lindsay Anderson that gave Malcolm McDowell the exposure to the entertainment world. His performance caught the eye of Stanley Kubrick who casted him in A Clockwork Orange and the rest is history. The movie is an interesting look at the hierarchy in the British boarding school system and a social satire on the elite class, religion and sixties England. Several actors along with McDowell appear in the sequel O Lucky Man.
