The rise and fall of a star

  • Jun 10, 2000
Rating:
+3
Pros: Redford, always a plus

Cons: Wood's singing - ouch

Unfortunately this portrayal by Natalie Wood did little to improve her box office success. Sending a recording of herself off to Hollywood, she is whisked away to become a star of the highest proportions. This is so highly unbelievable it ruins the idea of the entire movie. Sure, we would like to think that a virtual unknown could send a clip of herself off and become an instant star, but what do you think the chances of this happening are?

Add to this her less than acceptable singing voice, it sort of grates on your nerves. I think Natalie Wood was one of the most beautiful women in filmdom and I was sorry to see her in this release. Of course this was at a time when all dreams were surreal and all dreams were possible.

Playing opposite Wood in this movie is Robert Redford, who plays her husband. This is one of Redfords first films and his ‘people' tried to talk him out of the part as it portrayed a homosexual. This was back when homosexuals were ‘queers' and were met with pinched faces and closed minds. In actuality, this part affected him so much, with the material released by the producers without Redfords knowledge, he took a year off after making it - not the wisest thing for a newbie to do in the movie industry. Don't believe it hurt him though!

Also starring Ruth Gordon as Wood's mother, a slightly demented personality that spends more time in a sanitarium than out of it, adding to more of Wood's insecurities in this movie (the part, not her personal life). This movie is a loose interpretation of A Star is Born but Wood plays both the part of the rising star and the falling star, if you will. And the fact that she can pull off a 15 year old teenage part in the movie - kudos to her!

Not a particularly good or bad movie, just slightly mundane but not offensive to the eyes. Filmed back when movies most shocking ideals were homosexuals and insanity as opposed to flayed bodies and snorting coke.

Nominated for four Academy Awards (didn't win though) and Redford received a Golden Globe as star of the future - what insight!

Stars: Natalie Wood, Robert Redford, Christopher Plummer, Roddy McDowell, John Hale and Ruth Gordon.
