A benefit film for an old friend and mentor.

Just Heroes was a benefit film for Chang Cheh,  The former studio director for The Shaw Brothers was in ill health and had a lot of debts.  His former co-workers and proteges donated their time to make a film and use the profits to help out their old boss.  The cast is a who's who of Shaw Brothers alumni and future stars in the business.  Danny Lee produced the film and stars in the movie as Sou a gangster who respects his old boss who wants to retire.  Kuan Tai Chen (Boxer From Shantung) co-stars as Sou's brother Leung a not-so-righteous gangster who strives for power and David Chiang as Cheung, a former gangster who went legit and is now a fisherman.  Stephen Chow has a supporting role as Jacky, Leung's lackey and button man.  Wu Ma (co-director), James Wong (singer), Ti Lung, Lo Lieh, Phillip Ko, Shing Fui-On, Yuen Woo-Ping, Fung Hark-On and Park Man Wong all have small roles as well.

A crime boss wants to retire and leave the family business to one of his three adoptive sons (Sou, Leung and Cheung).  The announcement will be made after his official retirement but the old boss is brutally assassinated by unknown assailants.  Everyone is suspicious of each other as to whom would murder the old man.  Sou is official named as the new head of the family.  Unfortunately there are a few who are not too thrilled with the news.  Will Sou be a good boss?  Who was behind the brutal assassination?  How will the family business go on without any interference from outsiders who want a piece of it?  To find out these answers you'll have to watch Just Heroes.

An entertaining action/drama from John Woo and Wu Ma.  even though the production was rushed and filmed on a tight shooting schedule, the results are real good.  Not a classic movie by any means but a
nice tribute to Chang Cheh.  The actor and filmmakers showed their appreciation for their old mentor by devoting their time and effort in putting this project together.
