Searching for the Night Flower

  • May 13, 2001
Pros: The emphasis on the love Littlefoot has for his grandfather

Cons: The scenes at The Land of The Mists tend to be scary for young kids

The Bottom Line: This is one of the better movies in the series with the young dinosaurs friendship put to the test.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.

In Part Four of the Land Before Time Series, we have the Journey Through The Mists which introduces a new long neck family to the story. This turns out to be a migrating herd where the leader is known as the “old one” and are cousins of Littlefoot.

As in the others John Ingle is the narrator as well as the voice for Cera’s father. If you watch General Hospital you will recognize this voice as Edward Quartermaine. The five little dinosaur friends are Littlefoot the longneck, Cera the threehorn, Ducky, Spike and Petrie.

When the migrating herd arrives, all the dinosaurs and their families go to greet them and learn why they are at The Great Valley. As the old one explains their valley was once dry but it rained for so long that it is now The Land of the Mists.

On the way to meeting the herd Littlefoot’s grandpa suddenly feels ill and they learn from the old one that many other dinosaurs get this mysterious illness. The cure for them was the Night Flower, which was located in the Land of the Mists. It is far too dangerous to go back there says the old one.

Another member of the migrating herd is a female longneck, Ali, who looks just like littlefoot. His friends felt left out when Ali and Littlefoot became friendly and went off by themselves. Later that night Littlefoot snuck away to find Ali, asking her to take him to the Land of the Mists so he could get the Night Flower for his grandpa.

This is where the journey begins and a earthshake happens where Littlefoot gets stuck in a cave so Ali goes back to The Great Valley to get help from his friends. There is a dinosaur named Archy that Littlefoot befriends while waiting for help to arrive. Archy has no teeth and is slow moving. The voice of Charles Durning is refreshing in this role.

When Ali finds the gang she has a hard time persuading Cera to join, seems Cera might be jealous of the relationship Ali and Littlefoot now have. Finally they all go off back to the Land of The Mists to rescue Littlefoot and continue in the search for the Night Flower.

Archy ends up helping in the rescue and gets the kids in the right track to find their item. Trouble is around the corner with this blind crocodile and a bird that want to eat the kids for their next meal. They are called Icky and Gill and their scenes are not for the smaller children. They fight and bump into trees and a few times almost end up with one of the kids. One of the surprising scenes is when Spike calls out Ducky! in a loud voice that no one had ever heard before. Spike never speaks in any of the videos so this was a nice reaction to seeing Ducky almost land in the crocodiles mouth. Ducky is stunned to hear that voice and stops before she lands in the mouth of the crocodile.

The gang finally gets the Night Flower quite by accident, actually the Night Flower finds them! During all the turmoil at the Land of The Mists, Ali and Cera become friends with Ali explaining that all she ever had for friends before were longnecks, so that is why she sought out Littlefoot.

Grandpa eats the Night Flower and becomes better, the migrating herd depart with the kids hoping to run into Ali again. Well you just know we will see them again in Part Ten! There are songs in this video as the others, with some by the crocodile and bird and Archy.

This video shows what lengths the kids go to help out one of their elders and helps them overcome the jealousy when a new friend enters their little circle. They realize that although they are all different they still can have friends that are of the same dinosaur family.

There are times when the kids go against what their parents and grandparents tell them, but in this instance they were glad that Littlefoot took it upon himself to make his grandfather well.
