**** out of ****    While he had in fact directed "Boxcar Bertha" and "Who's That Knocking at My Door?" before it; "Mean Streets" was ultimately the film that established the voice, the passion, the vision of Martin Scorsese. The Mean Streets is the quintessential gritty urban drama. Forget about Goodfellas, this is where it all began. Scorsese filmed this movie with a street level attitude. The acting, writing and directing have never been better (before or since). I feel that it's a realistic look at the lower level Mafia. These guys are the ones that make the system work.
