Excellent Special Effects Beats Going to the Movies.

  • Sep 12, 2008
Pros: Excellent special effects, always a delight to see the ingenious new toys.

Cons: Not the best of the lot but this one goes right down the middle.

The Bottom Line: This is an excellent movie for a rainy day and will keep you happy until the next new Bond movie comes out.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.

If you are like me, when you were a kid whenever any James Bond movie came on, or Star Wars you would drop what you were doing just to make it to the television set and watch it. I have collected every one of the James Bond movies, and I actually have two sets, one set that I can watch and one set that no one can touch. If you were to try and purchase all of these at once, it would cost you a few hundred dollars. So it is better to try and purchase these one at a time. Nowadays, you can buy the old James Bond movies for fewer than five dollars. Moonraker, starring Roger Moore as James Bond was the 11th movie in a series of 22. This definitely was not one of the best movies out of the whole lot. But, on the other hand this was not one of the worst. This was the fourth time that Roger Moore has played James Bond out of a total of seven times. This was produced by Albert Broccoli and directed by Lewis Gilbert, they saw how profitable it was for the movie industry in 1979 for space exploration, that they decided to join the ranks of Star Wars and make a space age movie.

The movie starts out where the space shuttle was hijacked in midair, causing the explosion of a 747. This is where James Bond is attacked by Jaws who is 7 feet tall and has a mouth of metal teeth (played by Richard Kiel), and pushed out of a plane and then miraculously survives when he rips a parachute off of the pilot. Hugo Drax (played by Michael Lonsdale) the head of Drax industries is the main villain in this movie, when he meets Hugo Drax he also introduces James Bond to Dr. Holly Goodhead (played by Lois Chiles), she is a NASA astronaut and an undercover CIA agent who is investigating Drax industries for the US government. When these two first meet Doctor Goodhead's first impression of Bonds' chauvinistic remarks is not a good one.

Bond continues to interact with his boss, M., (played by a Bernard Lee), who introduces bond to Sir Frederick Gray (played by Geoffrey Keen). Britain's minister of defense and fills James Bond in about the whole situation about Moonraker. You will still see your brief interaction with bonds main scientist that invents all of the little toys that Bond gets to play with Q. (played by Desmond Llewellyn) started showing James Bond the new wrist activated dart gun, a gondola hovercraft, and a boat that turns into a glider these are just some of the neat toys that are in this movie. Just like in all of the other movies Miss Moneypenny (played by Lois Maxwell) and James Bond trade sexual looks and innuendos with each other even though there are only brief encounters.

As usual, the producer and director try and keep the sexual encounters and interludes at a minimum, they bring it up to a certain point and then it disappears. They keep it just clean enough so that it is not disgusting or offensive. They also keep your interest peaked by jumping from Venice, London, California, Rio de Janeiro, and even orbiting around Earth. The scenery is beautiful and all of the different locations that the shootings take place. And along with the toys that Q. invents, they give you a scene in one of NASA's centrifugal force chambers, they also have a gondola chase and an Amazon River Chase, but the most impressive of all was the laser battle in the middle of space and the destruction of the space station. This is a riveting scene that will keep you glued to your seat and your eyes wide open.

Roger Moore does an excellent job in his role as James Bond, we are accustomed to see his debonair and sexist attitude to be a commonplace whenever you see Roger Moore in the James Bond suit. There were four Bond girls that complemented Roger Moore during this movie and they were Corrine Dufour (played by Corrine Clery), Manuela (played by Emily Bolton) and the hostess (Leila Shenna) and let us not forget Dr. Holly Goodhead (played by Lois Chiles). All of these Bond girls were as beautiful as the next and they complemented Bond to the utmost importance of their job.

This is an excellent space adventure that pits James Bond against Drax industries, where his debonair and sexist attitude takes him to encounter many dangerous situations. A lot of these are not believable, but then again, this is the movies. Bond knows that Drax industries is the number one suspect, and that he is trying to murder the world's population and repopulate the world in the Drax industries image. As usual, this movie takes you to places that you would not ordinarily see in your every day life. It amazes me how he can travel in an hour and a half to California and the Amazon jungle, Brazil, and then back to orbiting the Earth. But just keep in mind that this is the movies and this will keep you interested during the whole time that you are watching this movie.

Just like all of the other Bond movies I enjoyed this one immensely. I guess you have to be a James Bond fanatic to enjoy all of his movies. I cannot wait to the newest movie comes out Quantum of Solace in October 2008. It is supposed to be the most expensive of all the films. Until that one comes out, this movie Moonraker will give you a futuristic look in today's time. During this movie James Bond tries to make jokes and make a try at some form of humor, but he does not do too well in that department. He probably needs to just stick to the spy business.
