Pete Seeger and "The Power of Song:" Making Principles a Pleasure

The DVDs came yesterday: three copies of the PBS program. Pete Seeger, The Power of Song. A friend had lent us a copy last Friday, and Lee has watched to it four times while I follow with a paltry one and a half.

Part of the PBS series American Masters, the DVD is a biography, an appreciation and a whole lot of stirring music. It is also a social history of the US during the much of the 20th century and the start of the 21st, during which Seeger held fast to his principles and made millions sing.

So we bought three copies, one for ourselves, and one each for the kids’ ménages. We tried to buy it from PBS directly, but it seems not to be available, but we found it at both Amazon.com and Amazon.ca—with, surprisingly, a lower price in Canada.

Definitely worth having

The closest I've ever been to seeing Seeger is seeing Tommy Makem, I guess in a way you could call him an Irish Pete Seeger. God, how I wish I could have seen him back in the day.

I think the only time I saw him in person was in the 1970s when a friend and I drove down from Montreal to some place on the Hudson (can't remember where exactly) and her kids to hear him sing at one of his hootenanies to protest pollution of the Hudson. It was a beautiful summer Sunday afternoon, and the little concert was was at dock on the waterfront. Very informal, warm, and fun. Since the event was so small we had a chance to talk to him, and when he learned we were from Montreal he encouraged us to work to de-pollute the St. Lawrence: "ought to get the Blue Nose involved," he said. Well, I never did approach the Nova Scotia folks involved in preserving that legendary schooner, but I did do some work with an anti-water pollution group here. Glad to report that the St. Lawrence is a whole heck of a lot better than it was. You can actually swim some places around Montreal now. Moral: songs carry a long way.

At age 90, Seeger performed 2 days this past summer at the Newport Folk Festival. He is amazing!

Pete Seeger is a true American original, Would be interested in grabbing a copy of this myself. Had the privilege of seeing him perform at Carnegie Hall about 20 years ago. A very memorable experience!
