Reaching that Point

"Peter and Vandy" is a love story that is told out of order (think "(Days) of Summer" and it shows how twisted and manipulative the couple becomes and then it looks at the question of "how did this happen and how did we get this way"? Directed by Jay DiPietro, it is a look at a strained romance. Peter (Jason Ritter) and Vandy (Jess Wexler) declare their love for each other and then show us their insecurities. When the film begins, Vandy is working at an art gallery and we see her articulating her love for Peter who is an insecure architect. From this point on, we are taken on a series of out-of-sequence scenes which show us the ups and downs of their relationship which seems based on passive aggressive feelings and neuroses.
Cinematically the film is beautiful to watch--New York looks beautiful and the acting is excellent but the entire experience comes across as puzzling. Some of it is very, very funny--painfully so and Wexler shines as Vandy. This is a fun story and we see the actors actually feeling their roles. The director has taken several events that could easily have been no reason for argument and they become arguments--making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, deciding whether to eat Chinese food or splitting up, for example.
The soundtrack is made up of indie music and really adds to the movie and if you like movies about disordered love stories than this a film you do not want to miss. It is innovative as it focuses on the frustrations that love can bring.
