This collection contains three Disney Halloween favorites: ROLIE POLI OLIE: A SPOOKIE OOKIE HALLOWEEN, THE BOOK OF POOH: JUST SAY BOO!, and OUT OF THE BOX: TRICK OR TREAT!. See individual titles for details.
Pros: Fun Craft Activity suggestions and entertaining episodes for Halloween
Cons: Menu can be annoying to navigate at first
The Bottom Line: Good Halloween episodes for preschoolers that are not too scary. Also, fun craft activity suggestions from Out of the Box.
This is a good collection of Playhouse Disney shows for Halloween. These shows are best suited for preschoolers, as Playhouse Disney shows are all geared towards that age group. The main feature on here is Rolie Polie Olie A Spooky Ookie Halloween. This is really three mini episodes that are about the Rolie Polie robot family that lives on a round planet celebrating Spooky Ookie Day (a Halloween like holiday on their planet). In one episode includes Olie, the boy robot, trying to scare his sister Zowie and her ending up scaring him. In another episode Olie tells dreams about Spookie Ookie and another episode is about Zowie having a dream about dancing pumpkins and meeting a friend in the pumpkin patch. Overall this show is entertaining and while slightly scary it all comes down to situations that turn to laughter and fun.
This DVD also has three episodes of the Book of Pooh related to Halloween. In the first episode is about Kanga having a Halloween party and Pooh and his friends wearing scary costumes. Piglet has trouble figuring out a scary costume to wear because the minor things he is afraid of do not scare the others. Before announcing the scary costume winner the gang first has to find Eeyore who ventured into the Scary Woods. In the second episode Piglet thinks his hat makes him brave and he ventures into the Scary Woods on a mission of bravery. The third episode is about Tigger, Piglet, and Rabbit getting spooked at Owls house. These are all great episodes for Halloween and have fun plots that preschoolers (and even some older kids) can enjoy.
There is also an episode of Out of the Box. This live-action show is about kids coming over to play in a clubhouse like atmosphere with two adults. They do arts and crafts and have story time. After the episode it also has a special instructional on how to make some Halloween crafts such as making a spider and spider web. This is a fun more interactive of a show than the others and easily leads into doing crafts.
There are two special features. One is a Pumpkin Activity by choosing the pumpkin on the Menu. Here you can create a jack-o-lantern by selecting a pumpkin shape, eyes, nose, and mouth. There is also a Craft Activity, which is actually the same thing that plays after you watch the Out of the Box episode. It is selected by choosing the Box on the Menu.
There is one thing that can get annoying with this DVD. It is the Menu. It has this narration that goes and explains how to use the menu. Well, as it explains you can only hit play when the ghost moves to where you want it, such as the Play All, Rolie Polie Olie, Book of Pooh, or Out of the Box. It can take forever for it to play through and get to the Play All button. I found you can skip ahead to each button if you use the next chapter button on your remote. Once the narration finished you can also easily navigate the menu as normally is allowed using the arrows.
Viewing Format: DVD Suitability For Children: Suitable for Children up to Age 4
