RambomeetsAlienin this terrific science-fiction thriller from 1987, directed by John McTiernan just a year beforeDie Hardmade him Hollywood's most sought-after director of action-packed blockbusters. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite squad of U.S. Army commandos to a remote region of South American jungle, where they've been assigned to search for South American officials who've been kidnapped by terrorists. Instead they find a bunch of skinned corpses hanging from the trees and realize that they're now facing a mysterious and much deadlier threat. As the squad is picked off one by one, Arnold finds himself pitted against a hideous alien creature that's heavily armed and wearing a spacesuit enabling the creature to render itself invisible. The title says it all in describing the relentless, escalating action that follows, maintained by McTiernan with an abundance of visual flair. The film's special effects are still impressive, and stunning locations in the Mexican jungles create a combined atmosphere of verdant beauty and imminent danger. The plot doesn't hold up to much scrutiny, but the movie's so exciting and tightly paced that its weaknesses seem irrelevant.--Jeff Shannon
*** out of **** There will never truly be a Predator hunter/victim better than Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's a natural born action star who was meant to play these kinds of roles, even if he's never truly spectacular in any of them. None the less, "Predator" is movie fanboy goodness in nearly every way. It's got plenty of action and a solid amount of blood, as well as a heart and a wild ride full of thrills. Also, there's plenty of good movie … more
This is definitely, in my opinion, a movie that children should not be watching. I made the mistake of letting my 9 and 10 year old watch this, and spent the entire night up with them because of nightmares. For the adult side of things, this is a pretty good movie if you like high action movies. 3 stars from me.
is a true sci-fi classic. Like the Alien Quadrilogy (Alien/ Aliens /Alien 3 /Alien Resurrection), a powerful alien creature slaughters humans like cattle. What makes Predator so great - and what more recent copycats lack - is a great cast of characters and dramatic scenes. Far from just being cannon fodder, you actually start to like Dillon and Blane and the rest. I'll never forget the scene when Dillon becomes so nervous he breaks his razor while shaving - what a great way … more
Predator was another big budget star vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger. This time he's a special Ops team leader named Dutch who's on a mission is to rescue some hostages in the middle of some sweltering jungle somewhere in Central America. Carl Weathers co-stars as a CIA Operative who's in charge of the mission. A lot of sweat and testosterone in this pictures as the two have a arm "tussle" when they see each other. Team members Jesse Ventura and Bill Duke have … more
This movie is one of the most engaging and intense science fiction movies ever made. An alien lands in the jungles of Central America and is on a hunt with humans serving as the prey. Armed with high-tech weapons and an invisibility screen, it can move through the jungles at will, but can be injured by firearms. Arnold Schwarzenegger is the leader of a team of mercenaries sent into the jungles of Central America by the American CIA. Their mission is supposedly to rescue some hostages … more
I must admit that even for a girl, I think this is one of the best nail-biting, or fist smashing if you prefer, action movies that has hit the screen in the past years. This movie came out when I was six years old and along with the Conan movies, which were one of the first movies I have ever seen, made Schwarzenegger my favorite action hero. Since my father had the terminator hair cut and even resembled him, I was sucked into a world of fantastic movies, which never gave me nightmares and pretty … more
Even after 17 years, I still enjoy this hybrid film which combines the best features of action adventure with special effects which create what is generally referred to as "science fiction." Here's the basic situation: Major Alan ("Dutch") Schaefer (Schwarzenegger) and his personal team of highly trained and highly skilled special operatives are enlisted by the CIA to go into an unnamed Latin American country to rescue others who had previously been assigned there on a special mission to.... … more
