Pressure Cooker (2008)

1 rating: 5.0
Special Interests movie directed by Jennifer Grausman;Mark Becker

I grew a deep hunger while watching 'Pressure Cooker', not just from the students' mouthwatering dishes, but from the fact that teacher/chef Wilma Stephenson could uniformly inspire such success. --Matthew Sorrento, Film Threat

Moving Ahead

Amos Lassen

Meet Wilma Stephenson, a teacher who acts a marine drill sergeant and is loud and cranky and even threatens bodily harm to her students but who as a heart of gold and big goals for the people she teaches. She is the main character in "Pressure Cooker", a new documentary by Jenifer Grausman and Mark Becker. Wilma is so tough that she is a masochist's dream and a nerd's worst nightmare. For her students at Philadelphia's Frankford High School, she is a way out of the ghetto and an urban smothering lifestyle. The film also focuses on three students, all seniors and members of Wilma's cooking class. Fatoumata is a recent immigrant from Africa who want so to succeed in American and escape her father who oppresses her; Tyree is a football player who lives with his single mother and Erica, is a young woman who cares for her blind sister and now wants to do something with her life.
Wilma has the students vie for scholarships to culinary schools so that they can secure a better future for themselves and she represents what the right teacher can mean top a student who is looking for a way out--it is her strength and grace that makes her a role model.
This is a wonderful documentary that shows what wonderful influences teachers can be. It is uplifting and enlightening and even suspenseful sometimes as we gain insights into the minds of the students and witness Wilma doing her thing.
