The Psychic [aka Premonition] - 2004

  • Mar 16, 2009
Pros: none offhand

Cons: disjointed, poor acting, bad script

The Bottom Line:
“My friends all tell me maybe I should seek a psychic
They tell me just beware I may or may not like it”
~Vanessa Hudgens

Not a particularly good movie, The Psychic [aka Premonition], tries to dump as many different disasters into one movie that it can letting the hero don his cape and perform outlandish feats. It centers around the story of Det. Jack Barnes who is making an innocent stop at a medical facility and ends up in the middle of a robbery, ending in a car chase. He and his partner are in a horrible wreck, partner losing his life with only a couple of weeks left on the job [so cliche] and Det. Barnes dying two or three times on the way to the hospital.

Suddenly he has amazing powers that allow him to see into the future, premonitions if you will, and he attempts to thwart all these happenings, to no avail. Even though the FBI is involved, and he is both a decorated detective but also ex-military, no one takes heed when he tells them about upcoming events. Well, after all, who would? Not even when he explains about terrorists and bombs and plutonium. So, naturally, Barnes has to take it upon himself to stop these acts.

He isn’t acting alone, however, he is joined by some weird dude that appears out of nowhere. As it turns out, he and Barnes have several things in common.

The truly sad thing about this movie is the fact that they cast Catherine Oxenberg as his wife and we don’t get one single cleavage shot or anything. What a waste.

The Psychic was directed by Jonas Quastel, no awards, rated R for violence. Casper Van Dien played the part of Jack Barnes but other than he and Oxenberg there is no one vaguely familiar in the movie. The entire thing is rather disjointed and seems almost thrown together. Not a pleasant viewing experience at all.

About the closest thing you see as any kind of relationship is between Barnes and his captain. No family shots or interaction, no jovial interaction between fellow officers. Just, bam, right to the action and keep it up until we can use all the disasters we can think of for a two hour time frame.
