* out of ****      "Pulse", also known as "Kairo", was a nice, creepy Japanese horror film that made its U.S. debut in 2005 and has since garnered somewhat of a cult following. Don't get me wrong; it's a good movie, and it got some solid praise, but the fans love it the most and boy do they know it. This was probably the worst horror film I have seen in quite a number of years. Besides being a rip-off of the movie series where people rent a video tape and die, the picture was dark throughout, the plot was very difficult to follow and it was difficult to figure out what you were seeing on the screen most of the time.       The special effects looks something that any amateur could produce with a camcorder. Ghosts, or ethereal dead are always there-- but unseen until humans unwittingly open up the extra bandwidth and let them in.    There was a Twilight-zone/Outer Limits quality to the concept. The problem was that I did not care about the characters. No build-up, no history, no emotional hook. Nothing. I saw PULSE (the "unrated" version) just 5 days ago, and I feel even now that I can hardly remember half of what happened in the film...so generic and uninteresting did it turn out to be.     The film has a promising premise. Ghosts are using the internet to enter into our world, because they operate on a frequency that we've now been able to tune in to. For a film named "Pulse" and utilizing high-speed communications and modern technology as the catalyst for terror, this movie sure is a snoozer. Let's face it folks, cellphones, computers, etc. are sure fun to mess with on your own, but they are downright boring to watch someone else use them in a film. Imagine our wireless technologies made a connection to a world beyond our own. Imagine that world used that technology as a doorway into ours. Now, imagine the connection we made can't be shut down.
