Random Hearts, suffered from a wandering plotline

Pros: Well, ummm, Kristin Scott Thomas has beautiful eyes

Cons: The Plot!!!

Every once and a while, I actually (believe it or not) see a movie that bores me to tears; Random Hearts was one such movie. The screenplay was disjointed; the plot while plausible lacked real believability, and the dialog; my 12-year-old daughter could have written better lines!

The Plot: Dutch Van Den Broeck (Harrison Ford), a veteran Washington D.C. no nonsense, internal affairs cop, and Kay Chandler (Kristin Scoot Thomas), is a congresswoman from New Hampshire. Kay who is in the middle of her reelection campaign, and Dutch, are thrown together when a plane on its way to Miami, crashes killing both of their spouses. Dutch, ever the detective starts noticing holes in the story his wife fed him in order to leave for Miami and discovers that his wife (Susanna Thompson of Once and Again), and Kay Chandler’s husband (Peter Coyote) were having an affair and were off to a secret love nest in FL. And oh yes, as an aside Ford is in hot pursuit of a bad cop!

The movie starts quite dramatically with the plane crash and the first confrontation with the bad cop played by Dennis Haysbert. And gets slightly better when Ford starts unraveling all the lies his wife has told. But after a while the movie slows and gets down right boring! Harrison Ford seems to sleep-walk through most of the movie, and it is not adequately explained why he is on this quest to find out the depth of his dead wife’s deception (because she is now dead and what can it possibly matter) until the end of the movie, and even then it’s not really believable. Kristin Scott Thomas’ performance while a little more animated, was nonetheless equally as boring.

To be fair the script has to take much of the blame for the slow pace and disjointed nature of the movie. The dialog was very disconnected and never really made much sense. The actors in would be asked to say lines and I (and my spouse) would be left wondering how it fit together with what was going on on-screen. For example, in the scene in which Ford and Scott Thomas meet for the first time, Ford seems lost in a world of his own and just stares at Scott Thomas while she mumbles meaningless dialog, and we are left wondering when will have ever tell her why he is there! When he finally does, some 5 minutes later, we no longer care.

Which brings me to my next theme; neither my spouse nor myself cared anything for any of the characters! We knew nothing about them when the movie started and nothing about them when it ended. There was no character development, at least as far as I can see. And this was supposed to be a romance, but there was zero chemistry between Ford and Scott Thomas and their romantic entanglements lacked spark and realism.
Bottom line: I did not like this movie. And although I have enjoyed both Ford and Scoot Thomas as actors in other vehicles, I was left wondering what both were thinking when they signed on to this project. And what was Charles Dutton thinking? I know you need the exposure my brother, but please not another stinker like this one!
