The kidnapping/shapeshifting/engagements simply never ends

  • Feb 25, 2005
Pros: These characters are just all so ridiculous, it’s so hilarious…

Cons: Holy crap the English dub…

The Bottom Line: It's hard to go wrong when you have a panda that has to hold up signs in order to talk.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie''s plot.

Ranma 1/2, a long series made by Rumiko Takahashi, who also created Inuyasha if you’re familiar with that. If you’re not familiar with either one, I recommend fixing that. ^_~

If you’ve never seen the series, then the only thing you would be clueless about is the characters themselves. There are so many of them, it’s hard to keep track. I had barely seen any of the series before seeing the two movies and the Christmas special. Needless to say, I had no idea on who half these people were. Almost all of them turn into some kind of animal (or in Ranma’s case, a girl) when splashed with cold water, and only hot water can set them right. In short, it might be a good idea to look things up before you do anything.

It all starts out simply enough. Kuno invites Akane to come sailing on his boat. How could things possible get out of hand from there? Because then everyone and their grandma (literally) invites themselves along for the ride, and it isn’t very long before there’s a storm and the entire group is marooned on a tropical island. But that’s okay because they’re making the best of it, lounging on the beach, swimming (although poor Ryoga won’t, for fear of revealing his, P-chan side).

But as usual in the world of Ranma, things don’t stay normal. Suddenly all the girls are getting kidnapped until it’s just Akane and Ranma left. They decide to use Ranma’s other side as bait. Their plan works and a youth named Toma appears before them, his followers close by. Apparently he’s been taking the women to his home island of Togenkyo to be possible brides (big surprise). Toma is a master of illusions, and on his island there exists a spring that turns anything the water touches into a man. He manages to kidnap Akane and escape.

The group turns their attention to Togenkyo to rescue all the girls and to hopefully take a dip in the spring and cure themselves of their various duck/pig/panda/woman curses. Haha. Ranma, being as he has er, womanly potential, goes “undercover” to compete in the Martial Arts Marriage Contest. Yeah, you heard me right.

So who will win? You can guess. Will anyone get to the spring water? I’ll bet you could guess that too. Do you have any idea how events lead up to answer those questions? More than likely the answer there is no. So why don’t you go find out?

Ugh, let’s talk about the voices first. Most of the guys and Shampoo I didn’t mind at all. Soun Tendo, Mousse, Ryoga, Kuno, and were a few of the best. The women, however, just didn’t work at all. They didn’t seem to fit the characters, and several even sounded pretty similar. Nabiki and Ranma in particular. Nabiki sounded way too snobby, and Ranma was done by a girl – both sides. Yes, that’s right, even the male Ranma was done by the same girl. It was really annoying because it was totally obvious. Goku being done by a woman in Japanese is one thing because I didn’t have a clue until I read about it, but Ramna done here by a woman was just horrible. Whoever decided that made a very bad choice. Wow…I have it on right now and it’s just so bad…

Ok, I’d better switch or I’ll keep complaining all night. So what about the movie? As Ranma 1/2 goes, things are ridiculous and tons of fun. Akane is always beating up Ranma, Ranma is always complaining about Akane’s cooking, Kuno is full of himself, and well, everyone is themselves. The fights are, um, interesting, I think the best actually being Mousse’s fight. This is a four star movie all around and if you’re feeling a little goofy, then perfect for a relaxing night. Just make sure you get the Japanese version…seriously.
