The movie begins with a young man being beaten because he befriends Jane Withersteen, an heiress with valuable land and animals.

As members of a sect are about to whip the man, a rider comes into view. It is a man named Lassiter a man of reputation and wanted in connection to two killings.

Lassiter asks what the crime was for the treatment of the man and when he learns that it was only his friendship for the woman, he orders the men to set him free. They seem about to argue but when he mentions his name, they leave.

Jane is a member of a sect in the American southwest. The members of the sect want Jane to marry their leader, Deacon Tull, so the sect can get access to her land and animals.

As the story continues, rustlers make off with a part of Jane's herd and she learns that her riders had been called in by the sect. So she hires Lassiter.

The story is interesting but the setting is beautiful. Lassiter and Jane Withersteen become attracted to one another and Lassiter explains that he came to this area in search of a woman's grave. Later we learn who this is and what her connection to the story is.

Ed Harris plays his role well and Amy Madigan is also good in her role. Robin Tunney plays a role of a young person with a connection that we learn about along the way.

I thought the plot was predictable and one of those movies where certain action is about to take place and you almost say aloud, don't do that!.

However, for a period of entertainment and with the knowledge that this is taken from Zane Grey's novel of the same name, that makes the movie that much more interesting.
