Two German slackers and their quest to go to Peru.
Jan 13, 2010
Michel (Michael Konig) and Gunther (Gunther Kaufmann) are two slackers who have been childhood friends. Michel's girlfriend Hanna (Hanna Schygulla) accidentally reunite the old friends when Gunther is over at their pad trying to sell her some products. After a violent skirmish, the two buddies patch things up and plan a quest to search for Inca and "Mayan" treasure in Peru. The problem is that the two guys have dead-end jobs and don't make a lot of money. Hanna is against the idea of Michel traveling halfway across the globe to search for "treasure" in Peru and is jealous of is friendship with Gunther. The film follows them trying to earn money and plot ill advised schemes to raise enough funds for the trip. We also learn about Hanna, the spoiled rich girl who secretly wants them to fail.
An early TV movie from Fassbinder (who also has a small part as a creepy guy in a bar). Despite the small budget, Fassbinder's acting troupe (Ulli Lommel, Kurt Raab, Ingrid Caven, Harry Baer, Lilo Pempeit and Irm Hermann) round out the supporting cast. A interesting film that is also a time capsule of life in early 70's West Germany and a sign of things to come from Fassbinder. A comedy-drama about the friendship, relationships, social class and the working world. If you enjoy Fassbinder films then you'll want to check out his hidden gem. Check out Hanna Schygulla, she's looking fine in this film.
