Saving Grace - 2000

Pros:  I haven't laughed that much since Calendar Girls, or maybe it was the brownies

Cons: none for me

The Bottom Line:

"We could, roll some weed play some records and talk
I got a fly spot downtown brooklyn, new york"

Every once in a while I enjoy watching a comedy as long as it isn't truly slap stick, and I found that when I viewed Saving Grace.   It was directed by Nigel Cole from a story by Mark Crowdy.   Because of drug use and language, it has an R rating.  It has been nominated for 12 awards, winning two.

The story:
Grace Trevethyn leads a fairly normal life.  Her home looks upper middle class, maybe a bit better.   Then her husband commits suicide and she discovers he has left her in a bad financial way PLUS she discovers he has a mistress in London.   Suddenly things aren't as rosy for Grace as she thought.

When she happens on a local that has a small problem with his "plants" and since she is known as the queen of horticultural in the area, they team up and grow the most remarkable crop of marijuana I've ever seen.   The fact that the entire town is aware of her growing stash, including the constable, and turns their heads, makes it even more lively.

Of course there are some unbelievable sequences, but only the demure Grace could pull off trying to deal her pot on the streets of London while dressed like The Queen Herself.  But she does manage to meet up with a charming, and disarming, drug lord that turns her head.

The actors:
Brenda Blethyn played a delightful part as Grace.  Perky, entertaining, endearing, you totally loved her start to finish.  Tcheky Karyo played the part of the charming drug lord and the balance of the cast was just a joy to watch.

DVD extras:
~Both widescreen & full frame versions are available
~commentary tracks
~cast/crew filmographies

Overall impression:
I had a grand old time.  I loved Grace getting high, hell, I loved the whole damn town getting high.   It was a nice change of pace and the movie presented well.
