I don't know why this film got so many positive reviews. Other than Giancarlo Esposito's excellent portrayal of Sherry's parole officer, this movie has little to offer.       Sherry fresh out of prison for stealing to buy drugs, is willing to have sex with anyone whether it is a man giving her a job or her rooming house supervisor. I found several of these scene distasteful. Meanwhile Sherry is trying to reconcile with her daughter after being away in prison. Her …

Pros: Maggie Gyllenhaal performance; supporting cast     Cons: Very few     The Bottom Line: A starkly realistic portrayal of the human condition, worthy of British cinema.      Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a versatile actress; she has starred a number of vehicles most of which pushed the dramatic envelope as it were. Her latest Sherrybaby (2006) does so again taking an unflinching …

Pros: Performances, particularly Ms. Gyllenhaal and Ms. Simpkins.      Cons: Nothing really; the small movie sets its sights on a target and hits it accurately.      The Bottom Line: This is a must if you are a M. Gyllenhaal fan. It is also rare to find a film about drug use and abuse that isn't sentimental      Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.      Sherry (Maggie …

Laurie Collyer both wrote and directed this very fine little film that examines the world in which addicted people live, even after they have 'paid their debt to society' by being imprisoned. She does not play to the sympathy of the audience: she rather empathizes with one woman's plight in her struggle to gain control of a life she has never been able to successfully assemble.    Sherry Swanson (a brilliant tour de force by Maggie Gyllenhaal) has been in prison for robbery, …

Maggie Gyllenhaal is on a roll. She's had several fine performances, but this time she outshines herself in 'Sherrybaby'. In this movie she plays an ex-convict on parole after three years in prison. Getting out is a hard transition, and Gyllenhaal knows her character thoroughly. Being someone who stole money to supply a heroin addiction, her road to recovery in and out of prison is rocky at best. She has tough parole officers who won't give her an inch and starts living in a half-way house with …
