It took a while to find this in the database until I discovered it is going by the name Silent Venom. I watched it under the name Sea Snakes and it has a third choice, Recoil. Use whatever name you want, it is pure trash.

It was directed by Fred Olen Ray, Mark Sanderson was the writer. No awards and no rating listed on IMDB but it does have its’ fair share of blood and gore. It stars Luke Perry as Lt. Cmdr. O’Neill, Krista Allen as Dr. Andrea Swanson and Tom Berenger as Admiral Wallace. Berenger must have really ticked off his agent in a past life.

Here’s the deal. O’Neill has disobeyed orders and rather than be court-martialed, he has decided to end his Navy career. However, Wallace has given him a mission which, if he takes it, will eradicate his boo-boos and he can retire with honors. Seems like an easy task; pick up a disabled nuclear sub that has been used as a tourist attraction and return it to home base in Okinawa.

On the return trip he receives orders to go to an island and rescue a couple of governments scientists, Dr. Swanson and helper. However, what they don’t know is the group has been bio-engineering snakes to be weapons of mass destruction. It appears ‘something has gone wrong’ and the snakes are out of control. That isn’t why O’Neill and sub are picking them up. Oh, no. The island they are on is in the middle of a Chinese maneuver drill, that’s why.

Dr. Swanson was given order by some high up mucky-muck military dude to bring back two of the experimental snakes for evaluation. What she doesn’t know is the dumb as nails assistant decided the snakes would bring a pretty penny on the market and he has packed them all up, including the parental figures which are large and getting larger every minute. The fact they were bringing these highly toxic snakes on board the sub is never divulged to O’Neill, who just happens to hate snakes.

Once on board two things occur. Naturally the snakes get loose, however the more important thing, at least for a minute, is the fact the Chinese have discovered this sub in their waters and they decide to attack it. I’ll just leave the rest to your imagination.

The snakes … what’s up with that? When did snakes start roaring? The two big-uns are completely fake looking due to some poor computer graphics. They do use some real snakes for the smaller species, no thanks for being in that scene, not interested.

As far as acting, I would have made a more believable Navy man than Luke Perry who always looked like he was ready to start laughing any minute. He was about as sincere as a roll of soggy toilet paper. We won’t even bother to mention Berenger. He’s obviously working off some commitment. Krista Allen looked yummy but too dumb for color TV.

Overall a rather lame excuse for terror but it pays off with the comedy crowd. No extras on the DVD.

Thanks,
Susi
